MVMC Receives Thrifty Attic Grant |
|
Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:59 |
|
The entire team at Mountain Valley Medical Clinic would like to send a great big THANK YOU to all the wonderful volunteers at the Thrifty Attic, located in Londonderry, for their generous grant award that helped retro-insulate the entire medical facility located in Londonderry, VT. The Thrifty Attic has been a major supporter of the Clinic for years, allowing for much needed projects to be completed, thus enabling the clinic to better serve our community.
This past fall, MVMC conducted an energy audit to determine the benefits of retro- insulating the attic space of the entire facility in an effort to reduce heating costs in the winter as well as cooling costs in the summer. The audit estimated a 75% savings in energy use which convinced the administrative team to pursue this large project. But this project would not have been considered without the financial assistance of the Thrifty Attic.
“Once again, our loyal supporters at the Thrifty Attic made this project possible with their generous contribution”, says Carole Lechthaler, MVMC board President. “It allows the Clinic to save considerable energy costs, allowing us to better use our precious budget resources toward improving and maintaining high-quality healthcare”.
To date, the Clinic has seen a 66% decrease in heating fuel usage since the insulation was added in November. “The team at Vermont Foam Insulation located in Chester, VT, was very professional and did a very nice job of retro-insulating our attic space, plus they worked within our budget”, says Rob Litchfield, Office Manager. “The Clinic temperature is much more comfortable and healthier for staff and patients alike and we are making efforts to be much more green, and that’s a good thing”.

MVMC Receives Grant from Stratton Foundation |
|
Friday, 09 October 2009 07:39 |
|
Mountain Valley Medical Clinic (www.ourclinic.org) recently received a grant from the Stratton Foundation (www.strattonfoundation.org) to purchase supplies for the crash cart located in the Urgent Care area of the clinic. The grant money was used to purchase emergency medicine and supplies needed to assist in the event the medical team is faced with a life threatening illness.
“We cannot emphasize enough how important a role organizations such as the Stratton Foundation play in supporting what we do here at MVMC”, says Cyndi MacDonald R.N. “The crash cart is a critical piece of equipment that we hope to never use, but if we do, we know we are prepared with the most current equipment and supplies. Thanks to all the dedicated volunteers at the Foundation.” |

Germs and Proper Hand Washing Important During Flu Season |
“Washing your hands is the most effect way to prevent spreading germs” says Rob Litchfield, Laboratory microbiologist at Mountain Valley Medical Clinic as he spoke to the younger grades at this year’s Health Fair held at Flood Brook elementary school. Seen here, Rob shows the students a petri dish full of germs that had been grown an incubator. The day before the event Rob visited a first grade class and had several of them touched the plate with unwashed hands. They then washed their hands as they normally would and retouched a new petri dish and they were amazed by the results! Lots of scare looking germs grew where the dirty hands touched!
“The germs we are talking about are not visible to the naked eye.” Rob told the students. In order to help them understand the importance of proper hand washing which includes using soap, washing for 20 seconds, and drying with a clean paper towel was well illustrated when they saw the gross germs that grew overnight from their dirty hands. They also saw how ineffective improper hand washing was when retouching a petri dish. Public areas like schools where you have a lot of people in close quarters make simple hygiene practices like hand washing very important.”
The Health Fair was held on Friday, June 12th and included other presenters covering many topics like recycling, safety, and wellness. The students seemed really engaged and good times were had by all! |

Thank you Towns for your support!
On behalf of the Board at MVMC, I would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the towns in our catchment area who voted to support the contributions to MVMC. This money helps to offset a portion of the free care that we deliver to patients living in the community. The staff members at MVMC are so crucial to the care that is given to the community and authorizing these needed funds supports all their hard work! We applaud their commitment to excellence, their compassion and their dependability. MVMC is a unique part of our communities and we are so fortunate to have the staff that we do and the supportive patients that make up the communities that we serve.
Gratefully yours,
Carole Lechthaler MVMC Board President |

Saturday Success!
Beginning in January, MVMC added Saturday hours to meet the requests of our community. We currently staff with one provider, one nurse, and one receptionist starting at 8:30am. The schedule includes some booked appointments for patients who prefer being seen on a Saturday as well as same day opening for acute illnesses.
So far the response has been positive from many grateful patients who would have otherwise traveled at least 45 minutes to the nearest emergency room or waited until Monday.
"We are averaging 11 - 12 patients per Saturday " claims Rob Litchfield, Practice Manager. " The response from those patients has been overwhelmingly positive and we feel as the word gets out, more patients will be requesting appointments." |
2008 New England Roundtable Clinician of the Year, Dr. Roger Fox
Nominated by Denis Barton, MA, MBA, Director Office of Rural Health, Vermont Department of Health
Awarded October, 2008
Thirty three years ago, a young British doctor living in Boston, answered an ad from the back of The New England Journal of Medicine to come to a small town in Vermont and start a new clinic in the shadow of three ski mountains. A grassroots committee concerned with the lack of local medical care was about to see their idea of an accessible and affordable rural health center realized. The new doctor, our very own Dr. Roger Fox, quickly became woven into the fabric of the community. Easily recognized by his overalls and Wellingtons, he played polo and the sousaphone with equal passion!
This man who has become the figurehead of the Mountain Valley Medical Clinic has cared for three generations of families now; |

Dr. Fox proudly displays the 2008 New England Physcian of the Year Award along with Stephanie Wylie, Cindi MacDonald, Nancy Sharkey Fox, Patti DeNicola, Rick Hube, and Pat Roberts.
?
in a part of the world where people may live in a grand house with manicured lawns or in a rusty mobile home with holes in the floor and no working plumbing. Cyndi MacDonald, Dr. Fox?s practice nurse for the past 19 years, has seen firsthand that each of his patients receives the same care and attention.
Respected by his peers for his diagnostic skill, admired by the many students he has mentored for his encyclopedic knowledge, and loved by his many patients, friends and family members, we are proud to have Dr. Roger Fox recognized for this prestigious award.

MVMC Lab Received A Perfect Score
Ever wonder what type of lab service you can expect in a tiny medical clinic nestled in the rural hills of Southern Vermont? For those of you who have needed our lab services, you may already know the answer. Comment often heard from MVMC patients regarding the lab include how professional the phlebotomists are and how they rarely miss, the wide range of testing available, and how quick the turn around time is. What patients and supporters may not know is the high level of standards that are met on a daily basis to ensure quality, accuracy, and proficiency in maintaining MVMC lab's perfect record when it comes to the rigorous CLIA inspections that all licensed laboratories across the country face regularly.

Osteoporosis Screening Program Added To MVMC
Mountain Valley Medical Clinic is proud to announce that both Dr. Ronald Vallario and Dr. Roger Fox have recently attended the internationally accredited ISCD Bone Densitometry course and passed the rigorous exam on bone density testing for osteoporosis. Certification in bone densitometry is a demonstration of proficiency and is required by some insurances companies in managing osteoporosis. So why is this important? Because in August of 2008, MVMC purchased a state of the art, full-body, bone densitometer and created their own osteoporosis screening and disease management program in response to overwhelming requests from the community.
