Welcome to MVMC Health Connections!

MVMC Connections

To kick off our newsletter we held a contest among the staff to find just the right title. Nurse Roberta Carroccio suggested MVMC Health Connections and her colleagues voted it a winner! Here she receives her prize, a gas card, from Practice Manager Robert Litchfield

On behalf of the entire staff here at Mountain Valley Medical Clinic (MVMC), I am proud to present our very first newsletter, MVMC Health Connections. MVMC Health Connections will be writ-ten by the caring people of the clinic and sent to you quarterly. You?ll learn about our kind and skilled staff and health information that can improve your life.
MVMC Health Connections will also serve as a way to update you, our patients and supporters, of current improvements and changes at MVMC, including our current recruiting for a full time physician, beginning a much needed capital campaign, and recognizing new staff and board members.

MVMC is a special place where you are treated as an individual and your health concerns are treated with respect. It is one of the only remaining nonprofit, independent community clinics in Vermont, and its future depends upon the support of many local businesses, organizations, and individuals.
MVMC is your local healthcare resource for preventative medicine and urgent care. We are growing each year and would welcome the chance to be your primary care provider.
Thank you for your continued support,
Robert Litchfield
Practice Manager

Fall is the Time For You to Prevent the Flu

While the weather is still warm and most of us are enjoying fall outdoor activities, it?s hard to believe that flu season is right around the corner. In fact, now is the time to protect yourselves and your families by getting the flu vaccine.
What is influenza, or the flu It is a contagious disease that is caused by the influenza virus, which can be spread by coughing, sneezing, or nasal secretions. It can cause fever, cough, sore throat, headache, chills, muscle aches, and fatigue.
Flu viruses are always changing, adapting in order to infiltrate our defenses. Because of this, flu vaccines are updated every year. Scientists work to match the viruses in the vaccine to those causing the flu each year. There-fore an annual vaccine is recom-mended.

Who should get vaccinated? All children 6 months or older and adults 50 years of age and older should get the flu shot. The vaccine is also a must-have for people in certain high risk categories. These are: Women who will be pregnant during flu sea-son, anyone with long-term health problems, and those with weakened immune systems. The household contacts and caregivers of children from birth to 5 years old, people 50 years and older, and those with medical conditions that put them in the high risk categories mentioned previously should also be vaccinated.
In general, the flu vaccine is recommended for anyone who wants to avoid coming down with the flu this winter or spreading the flu to others.
The flu vaccine will be available at MVMC starting the first week of October. Call us then to schedule your shot and enjoy a flu-free winter!

Digital Imaging X-Ray Comes to MVMC

Mountain Valley Medical Clinic now offers state of the art digital imaging X-ray services, increasing the speed with which MVMC can diagnose patients, recommend treatment, and begin the healing process. Our new system offers increased flexibility and improved workflow which results in a greater ability to deliver high quality healthcare.
MVMC?s new digital X-ray sys-tem still takes images like a tradi-tional X-ray, but rather than printing on film, it saves the im-age to an attached computer just like you would with a digital camera. That image can then be sent electronically to the radiologist or any specialist of the patient's choice for review.
In addition to being faster and more efficient, the new system is also more environmentally friendly it eliminates the film, the chemicals, and their disposal that were required previously.

And now with electronic transmission, MVMC no longer is dependent on courier services to transport films.
According to Linda McGrath, R.T., MVMC's radiologist of 16 years, This is the most exciting, most interesting advance in radiography technology in years. It allows me to better serve my patients and dramatically improve the path to recovery from a couple of days to minutes for radiologist interpreta-tion of images.
MVMC has been able to install this new Konica Minolta system thanks to the generous support of local businesses, organizations, and individuals who are committed to helping us improve our ability to provide the best medical care possible

Meet MVMC's Front Desk Team

Front Desk Team

Each issue of MVMC Health Connections will feature a differ-ent department so that you can get to know the people that make our clinic special. In this first issue we focus on the first people you will meet when you call or visit MVMC.
When you or a loved one is sick or in pain, getting care when and where you need it can seem like a daunting task. At the Mountain Valley Medical Clinic you?ll be greeted by a front desk team that knows exactly how to help.

Christina, Nancy, Linda and Pat make up a team of profession-als to ensure that you are always welcomed, whether in person or by phone, by some one who cares. They do this in addition to managing the office support tasks that make the busy clinic run smoothly.
This is a true team; you'll often find them wearing coordinated outfits! You will always find them so cheerful and professional that the healing process starts as soon as you walk in MVMC's door.

MVMC Supporters - Wantastiquet Rotary

MVMC is fortunate to have the support of organizations and individuals in the community and beyond. These supporters provide the equipment, facilities, and technology that helps keep MVMC current in diagnosis and treatment methods.
One of those generous friends is the Wantastiquet Rotary chapter in Londonderry, VT. In keeping with their mission to support local initiatives, they recently awarded Mountain Valley Medical Clinic a $1200 grant to help upgrade an exist-ing office space to a private consult room most commonly used by physicians to review digital X-rays with patients.

We are very grateful to have ongoing support from organizations such as the Rotary so that we can fulfill our mission to provide high quality care to the residents of and visitors to our service area says Rob Litchfield, Practice Manager.
The grant allowed us to ad-dress patient privacy issues by renovating office space into a usable patient consult area.
Past gifts from other community organizations include exam room upgrades from the Thrifty Attic of Londonderry and lighting from the Stratton Foundation. MVMC is grateful for these and many more.

Making MVMC Wishes Come True

Because of a grass roots effort started by a few of our loyal supporters, MVMC is in its second year of benefiting from items posted on our 'Wish List' that is located in our waiting room. This very suc-cessful campaign has resulted in a diverse array of support, from volunteering in-kind services such as painting and donated artwork for our hallways, to safe toys for the waiting room, on-call pagers, and higher expense items like handicap accessible exam tables.

Each donation is greatly appre-ciated and directly relates to our ability to serve our patients!
September's featured wish list items include: medical journal subscriptions $100, a bulletin board for outside our front entrance ($200), and another handicap accessible exam table for our busy urgent care area ($2,000). We welcome any suggestions and offers you may have and appreciate all your support!
